Guest of the show Interfaces avec Méling on RM1 Radio Maurice on 13 July 2026, our founder looked back on the Aromanou journey: from a caregiver passionate about plants to the distillation house she is building today between Réunion and Mauritius.

De l'aide-soignante à la distillatrice

From caregiver to distiller

Avant Aromanou, il y a une aide-soignante diplômée d'État, et avant elle, une mère passionnée de plantes, elle-même formée par ses grands-mères aux gestes qui soulagent les petits maux du quotidien. Mariesolle raconte un souvenir d'enfance précis : le grand tilleul de la cour de son école, en France, dont on cueillait les fleurs pour les tisanes d'hiver. Plus tard, dans les services hospitaliers, elle utilise déjà les huiles essentielles pour accompagner les patients en addictologie — une première rencontre professionnelle avec l'aromathérapie, bien avant l'alambic.

Before Aromanou, there was a state-certified nurse's aide — and before her, a mother passionate about plants, herself taught by her grandmothers the gestures that ease everyday ailments. Mariesolle recalls a precise childhood memory: the great linden tree in her school courtyard in France, whose flowers were picked for winter tisanes. Later, in hospital wards, she was already using essential oils to support patients in addiction care — a first professional encounter with aromatherapy, well before the still.

Tout bascule à La Réunion en 2020, avec un alambic artisanal et les toutes premières huiles essentielles — le géranium rosat en tête, la plante qu'elle garde aujourd'hui comme signature. Une précision qui lui tient à cœur : une huile essentielle n'est pas vraiment une « huile » — elle flotte simplement au-dessus de l'eau de distillation, dont elle est distincte de l'hydrolat, plus doux et mieux toléré par les peaux sensibles, les femmes enceintes ou les enfants.

Everything changed in Réunion in 2020, with an artisanal still and the very first essential oils — rose geranium leading the way, the plant she still keeps as her signature today. One nuance she cares about: an essential oil isn't really an "oil" — it simply floats above the distillation water, and is distinct from the hydrosol, gentler and better tolerated by sensitive skin, pregnant women or children.

La rigueur d'une professionnelle

A professional's rigor

La même année, elle devient aromatologue certifiée à l'Étang-Salé, formée par Alstromérine. Entre 2022 et 2023, elle complète ce parcours à l'Aplamedom, l'institut réunionnais de valorisation des plantes à parfum, aromatiques et médicinales. De cette formation scientifique, elle retient une exigence : traçabilité de chaque lot, absence d'additifs, étiquetage complet des précautions d'usage — parce qu'une huile essentielle reste une substance puissante, à utiliser avec discernement.

That same year, she became a certified aromatologist in Étang-Salé, trained by Alstromérine. Between 2022 and 2023, she completed this path at Aplamedom, the Réunion institute for the valorisation of aromatic, medicinal and perfume plants. From this scientific training, she keeps one requirement above all: batch traceability, no additives, full labelling of precautions — because an essential oil remains a powerful substance, to be used with discernment.

La Réunion, où tout a commencé ; l'Île Maurice, où elle a ouvert sa boutique-atelier au Domaine de Labourdonnais — un 14 février, jour de la Saint-Valentin choisi à dessein. Un retour aux sources pour cette Mauricienne d'origine, dont les enfants ont grandi entre trois cultures : la France, l'Île Maurice et La Réunion.

Réunion, where it all began; Mauritius, where she opened her boutique-atelier at the Domaine de Labourdonnais — on 14 February, Valentine's Day, chosen on purpose. A return to her roots for this Mauritian by birth, whose children grew up between three cultures: France, Mauritius and Réunion.

Une même plante — géranium, citronnelle — donnera une huile essentielle différente selon qu'elle pousse à Maurice ou à La Réunion : le chémotype, cette « carte d'identité » de l'huile, varie avec le sol et le climat.

The same plant — geranium, citronella — will yield a different essential oil depending on whether it grows in Mauritius or Réunion: the chemotype, the oil's "identity card", varies with soil and climate.

Le jardin qui deviendra alambic

The garden that will become a still

Arrivée aux clés du Domaine début août, sur une terre en friche depuis plus de quatre ans, Mariesolle a d'abord laissé le sol se régénérer six mois durant, sans herbicide ni engrais — de quoi surprendre aujourd'hui les visiteurs devant des tomates bio disproportionnées. Elle tient à remercier Olivia et Marie-Hélène, au Domaine de Labourdonnais, qui ont cru au projet Aromanou et l'ont soutenu depuis ses débuts. Prochaine étape : faire venir l'alambic depuis La Réunion pour distiller, bientôt, les plantes cultivées sur place — la boucle se referme.

Handed the keys to the Domaine in early August, on land left fallow for more than four years, Mariesolle first let the soil regenerate for six months, without herbicide or fertiliser — enough to surprise today's visitors with oversized organic tomatoes. She is keen to thank Olivia and Marie-Hélène, at the Domaine de Labourdonnais, who believed in the Aromanou project and supported it from the start. Next step: bringing the still over from Réunion to soon distill the plants grown on site — closing the circle.

The craft of slowness

Distillation à basse pression, petits lots, surveillance manuelle, récolte au moment précis de la journée où la plante est la plus concentrée en molécules aromatiques : un choix assumé de lenteur, à l'opposé du rendement agro-industriel.

Low-pressure distillation, small batches, manual monitoring, harvesting at the precise time of day when the plant is most concentrated in aromatic molecules: a deliberate choice of slowness, the opposite of agro-industrial yield.
